THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE

Project: Digital collage using InDesign and Illustrator

If you could go back in time, what’s a historical period that you wish to be a part of? For me, it’s the Harlem Renaissance. There were so many artists that rose to fame during this period in the genres of poetry, music, art, and dance. I wanted to commemorate this magical time of my hometown by designing this 24” x 18” collage featuring line drawings of a few pioneers: Romare Bearden, Langston Hughes, and Billie Holiday. I also photographed the historical Abyssinian Baptist Church, Langston Hughes’ home (which still stands on 127th Street), and the Cotton Club. For texture, I added some strips of red and construction paper.
